2011 Season has come to a close...
2011 - well it's been successful with the usual highs and lows (with
many more highs I might add!), entertaining but above all else it has
been FUN!
We started the season with our 3 Saturday teams
competing in Division 1, Division 4 & Division 7 with the aim of
each team to be competitive and enjoy their cricket. The midweek team
were in Division 2 of the Shrewsbury Evening League and we entered 2
Junior teams, the Under 13's and the Under 11's into their respective
leagues.
1st XI
Playing Division 1 cricket for the first
time since 2002 and led by Hugh Morris the 1st XI had a great season
finishing 6th and managing to secure Division 1 cricket next year. With
the changes to the league structure coming in 2012 in was vital that a
mid-table finish was secured to ensure that the 1st XI plays in the
higher standard next time around. The 1st XI can now look forward to a
season playing the best of the current league and also (probably!) 4
teams from the existing premier league which was the aim at the start of
the season.
2nd XI
After a winning start on day 1 of the
2011 campaign new skipper Ross Langley found things got tougher from
that point until half way through the season where the 2nd XI, managing 3
wins in the first half of the season won 8 games in the second to end
the season strongly in 5th place.
3rd XI
Dave Smith led
the 3rd XI to a very successful season in Division 7 and although the
final league tables are yet to be published it would appear that a top 3
finish has been secured after a final day win against Wellington. A
mix of youth and experience has been key throughout the season in a hard
fought and competitive campaign. With the league structure changing
next term it's almost certain that our 3rd XI will not be playing in the
bottom division and can look forward to a season next time around
playing against better teams with better facilities.
Midweek
Almost
but not quite was the overall summary for our Midweek team this year as
for the 2nd year running they finished an agonising 2nd after leading
the division for much of the year! Dan Jones successfully skippered the
side again and we all look forward to 2012 where hopefully it wil be
3rd time lucky and we can get into the top division.
Knockin Knights - Under 13 & Under 11
Another
terrific year for our junior section where we saw an increase in
numbers attending and enjoying the Monday night coaching which in turn
saw an increase in the quality of play as the juniors put what they had
learned into practice on the field. The Under 11's capped an impressive
first season by winning the Shropshire Under 11 League by beating
Alberbury in an exciting season finale - a well deserved victory! 2012
promises to be just as exciting with the Knights as we look to retain
the title with the Under 11's and with another season behind them the
Under 13's will look to emulate their younger counterparts by also
looking to lift some silverware.
It goes without saying that all
of the above would not be possible without the unbelievable support
structure that our club has in abundance, but we're going to say it
anyhow!!
Many thanks to the club committee who spend countless
hours managing the day to day activity at the club, our wonderful tea
ladies who I'm sure if there would have been an award for most
impressive teas would have won that hands down! Our ground crew (Barry
& Higgy) for their relentless pursuit of perfection at the ground
(it looked and played fantastic all year!) the coaches and junior
organisers, our scorers and umpires and all of our loyal band of
supporters - thank you for your contribution to the Clubs great 2011
season.
Well, that's it, 2012 will be here before we know it and
it will also be our 150 year anniversary - if it's as enjoyable and as
successful as this year then we have a lot to look forward to!
